Your Care at ECHO
Cupping Aftercare

We're sending this after your first cupping session as a reference — feel free to keep it handy for future treatments as well. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

The marks are not bruises

Bruising results from compression and tissue damage. Cupping works through decompression — drawing circulation upward into the area rather than pressing down on it. The discoloration you may see reflects local circulation and tissue response, not injury.

The color and duration of marks varies and is clinically informative — though shades will vary based on skin tone, so the descriptions below are a general guide rather than an exact reference. No color change may indicate a physiological deficiency. Pink marks reflect healthy peripheral circulation. Red indicates moderate stagnation; dark red-purple indicates more significant restriction and these marks may take much more time to resolve. Water droplets on the skin surface following cupping suggests water retention in the tissue. Pigment splotches that show up after cupping reflect accumulated metabolic waste. The intensity and pattern of the mark generally corresponds to what's happening in the tissue — which is one of the reasons cupping is useful diagnostically, not just therapeutically.

If you have an event coming up where the marks would be visible — a beach trip, a wedding, anything with a strapless neckline — keep that in mind for timing future sessions. Marks are difficult to predict in advance, especially after a first treatment.

Detox reactions

Cupping mobilizes what the body has been storing in the muscle layer and brings it into circulation for processing. This is part of how it works — and it also means your body has to do something with what's been released. For most people this is uneventful. For some, particularly after a first session or a more significant treatment, it can produce fatigue, mild headache, achiness, or a general feeling of being run down for a day or two.

This is one of the reasons we start lighter in early sessions — to give your body a chance to respond and clear gradually. If your reaction feels significant or prolonged, let us know so we can adjust your next session accordingly.

In the next 24-48 hours

  • Keep the treated areas covered and warm — avoid cold drafts, cold water on those areas, or prolonged exposure to cold or wind

  • Stay well hydrated — this supports your body's clearing process

  • Avoid alcohol and strenuous activity for the rest of the day

  • Avoid hot tubs or saunas
