Understanding your insurance coverage before you begin
ECHO Acupuncture is in network with several major insurance plans in Oregon, including Regence (Blue Cross Blue Shield), Providence, Aetna, Cigna, Oregon Health Plan (OHP), and others.
Many plans cover acupuncture for pain-related conditions, pregnancy-related nausea, and select medical diagnoses. Coverage varies by plan and diagnosis, and we’re happy to help you understand your benefits before your first visit.
We serve patients in Gladstone, Jennings Lodge, Oak Grove, Milwaukie, Oregon City, and surrounding areas.

*Regence plans that route acupuncture benefits through Legacy Health are not accepted.
Out-of-Network Coverage
Many patients also have out-of-network acupuncture benefits, even if I am not in network with their plan. When that is available, I can usually bill those companies directly for your care using your out-of-network benefits. Please know that some plans apply a separate deductible to out-of-network services, and coverage can vary widely from plan to plan.
Auto Accidents
If you were injured in a car accident in Oregon and are seeking care for accident-related injuries, a medical referral is typically not needed to begin acupuncture care. In many cases, treatment is billed through your auto insurance claim rather than your health insurance.
Oregon auto policies generally include Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage, which helps pay for reasonable and necessary medical expenses related to the accident, regardless of fault. PIP typically covers eligible medical expenses incurred within two years of the accident, up to $15,000, or your policy’s PIP limit, unless those benefits have already been exhausted.
Regence (Blue Cross Blue Shield)
ECHO is in network with Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in Oregon.
Many Regence plans include acupuncture benefits for a wider range of medical conditions compared to other insurers. Coverage always depends on your specific plan and the condition for which care is being initiated.
Please note: As an exception to the rule, Regence plans that route acupuncture benefits through Legacy Health are not accepted, as these plans do not currently provide in-network access to acupuncture services.
If you’re searching for an in-network acupuncturist who accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield in the Gladstone area, we’re happy to verify your benefits before your appointment.
Kaiser Permanente
ECHO is in network with Kaiser Permanente plans.
If your Kaiser plan includes acupuncture benefits, you may be eligible for in-network coverage. Depending on your specific plan, visits may be self-referred or you may be referred from your PCP.
If you’re unsure which applies to you, feel free to reach out beforehand — we’re happy to help confirm eligibility and next steps.
Oregon Health Plan (OHP)
We accept most forms of Oregon Health Plan (OHP), depending on your Coordinated Care Organization (CCO).
OHP covers acupuncture for specific diagnoses outlined by the state. Commonly covered conditions include:
-
Back and spine conditions
-
Migraine headaches
-
Osteoarthritis of the knee
-
Neoplasm-related (cancer-related) pain
-
Pregnancy-related conditions, including severe nausea, breech presentation (33–38 weeks), and back or pelvic pain
-
Substance use disorder, when part of a documented treatment plan
-
Tobacco dependence
-
Post-stroke depression
A referral from your primary care provider is required for OHP.
If you’re unsure which CCO you’re assigned to or whether your condition qualifies, feel free to reach out beforehand — we’re happy to help confirm whether we’re in network and review coverage details with you.
Medicare
Medicare Part B (Traditional Medicare)
At ECHO, Medicare Part B acupuncture billing is available only for chronic low back pain.
This benefit applies when:
-
Low back pain has lasted 12 weeks or longer
-
The pain is non-specific (not caused by cancer, infection, inflammatory disease, or another systemic condition)
-
It is not related to surgery or pregnancy
-
CMS diagnostic criteria are met
Coverage includes:
-
Up to 12 visits within the first 90 days of the initial visit
-
Up to 8 additional visits if clinically meaningful improvement is demonstrated
-
A maximum of 20 visits within a rolling 12-month period
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)
Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) are administered by private insurance companies and often provide broader acupuncture benefits than traditional Medicare.
In-network Medicare Advantage plans at ECHO typically cover acupuncture for musculoskeletal conditions, including pain and neuropathy, as well as chemotherapy-induced nausea. Providence and Kaiser Medicare Advantage may require a referral from your primary care provider, depending on your plan.
We’re happy to verify your specific plan benefits prior to scheduling so you know exactly what to expect.
