Acupuncture for Long COVID
Support for Post-COVID Fatigue, Brain Fog, Breathlessness, Dysautonomia & Lingering Symptoms
Long COVID is still being understood — by medicine, by researchers, and by the millions of people living with symptoms that arrived with a COVID-19 infection and never fully left. Fatigue that no amount of rest resolves. Cognitive fog that makes thinking feel effortful. Breathlessness out of proportion to exertion. A nervous system that stays dysregulated long after the acute illness has passed. These are real, physiologically grounded experiences — and they deserve real care.
East Asian Medicine was built for patterns of lingering illness and incomplete recovery. The framework for understanding how an acute illness can leave lasting disruption in energy, circulation, nervous system regulation, and organ function has existed for centuries — and the clinical tools developed to address these patterns translate directly to long COVID recovery. At ECHO, care for long COVID is paced, individualized, and oriented toward gradual restoration rather than forcing recovery before the body is ready.
What We Support
-
Post-exertional fatigue — exhaustion that worsens disproportionately with activity and takes extended recovery
-
Brain fog — difficulty concentrating, poor memory, word-finding difficulties, or cognitive sluggishness
-
Breathlessness — shortness of breath with activity or at rest, without a confirmed respiratory finding
-
Dysautonomia and POTS — heart rate instability, postural dizziness, and nervous system dysregulation
-
Sleep disruption — difficulty sleeping, unrefreshing rest, or disrupted sleep architecture
-
Chest discomfort and palpitations — without a confirmed cardiac finding
-
Persistent low-grade inflammation — recurring symptoms, immune reactivity, or inflammatory patterns
-
Mood changes — anxiety, depression, or emotional dysregulation following COVID-19
-
Gastrointestinal symptoms — digestive disruption, bloating, or appetite changes persisting after infection
-
Sensory changes — loss of smell or taste (parosmia, anosmia), or altered sensation
-
Joint and muscle pain — aching or weakness persisting beyond the acute illness
How Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Help
Long COVID appears to involve multiple overlapping mechanisms — persistent viral remnants, immune dysregulation, mitochondrial dysfunction, autonomic nervous system disruption, and microbiome changes. No single approach addresses all of these. East Asian Medicine's strength here is its capacity to work across multiple systems simultaneously — supporting immune regulation, nervous system stability, circulation, and energy production together, rather than targeting a single pathway.
A critical principle in long COVID care is pacing. Post-exertional malaise — the worsening of symptoms after activity, often delayed by 24–48 hours — is one of the most consistent features of the condition. Treatment at ECHO is calibrated carefully to avoid triggering this response. Sessions are gentle, especially early in care, and are adjusted based on how your body responds between visits.
Herbal medicine is often central to long COVID recovery — providing continuous systemic support between sessions and addressing the specific pattern of depletion, inflammation, or nervous system dysregulation that characterizes each individual's presentation.
Treatment is designed to:
-
Support immune regulation and reduce persistent inflammatory activity
-
Improve energy production and reduce post-exertional fatigue
-
Calm autonomic nervous system dysregulation — including POTS and heart rate instability
-
Improve cognitive clarity and reduce brain fog
-
Support sleep quality and restorative rest
-
Address gastrointestinal, respiratory, and mood-related symptoms
-
Restore gradual functional capacity without triggering post-exertional worsening
Long COVID recovery is often non-linear. Progress may be gradual, and setbacks are common — particularly early in recovery. Care at ECHO is paced to work with your body's current capacity, not against it. Please bring any relevant medical history, testing, or specialist notes to your first visit.
What to Expect
Your first session includes a careful, unhurried intake covering your COVID-19 history, the timeline of your symptoms, what makes them better or worse, and what else is happening in your health picture. Long COVID presentations vary enormously — some people are primarily fatigued, others are primarily neurological, others carry a diffuse constellation of symptoms — and care is individualized accordingly.
Early improvements often show in sleep, mood, and cognitive clarity. Fatigue and exercise tolerance tend to improve more gradually. Most people find that consistent care over three to six months produces meaningful cumulative improvement — though the pace varies significantly depending on the severity and duration of the condition.
