Acupuncture for Endometriosis

Support for Pelvic Pain, Menstrual Cramps, Inflammation & Quality of Life Alongside Conventional Care

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus — on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, bladder, or elsewhere in the pelvic cavity. The pain it generates can be extraordinary: debilitating menstrual cramps, pelvic pain throughout the cycle, pain with intercourse, bowel and bladder symptoms, and a fatigue that compounds everything. And yet it takes an average of seven to ten years to diagnose, leaving many people to manage profound symptoms without a clear explanation for years.

At ECHO, care for endometriosis is offered as a complement to gynecological management — not as a replacement for it. Treatment works to reduce pain, calm the inflammatory pattern driving symptoms, and support quality of life in a condition that conventional medicine can manage but not yet cure.

What We Support

  • Pelvic pain — chronic pelvic pain throughout the cycle, not only during menstruation

  • Menstrual cramps — severe dysmenorrhea that significantly limits function during the period

  • Pain with intercourse — deep pelvic pain during or after sex

  • Bowel and bladder symptoms — pain, urgency, or changes in bowel and bladder function associated with endometriosis

  • Fatigue — the profound exhaustion that accompanies chronic pain and inflammation

  • Mood changes — anxiety, depression, or emotional dysregulation associated with chronic pain and hormonal fluctuation

  • Fertility concerns — supporting reproductive health and reducing inflammation in those trying to conceive

  • Post-surgical recovery — following laparoscopy or other endometriosis-related procedures

  • Pain management between medical interventions — reducing symptom burden while awaiting or following surgical treatment

  • Endometriosis alongside adenomyosis — the frequently co-occurring condition of uterine wall involvement

How Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Help

Endometriosis involves chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, hormonal sensitivity, and central pain sensitization — the same nervous system process that amplifies pain over time in conditions like fibromyalgia. Acupuncture addresses all of these dimensions: reducing inflammatory signaling, modulating the central nervous system's pain processing, regulating hormonal activity, and supporting the immune system's role in managing endometrial tissue growth.

Pain relief is often the most immediate effect — many people notice meaningful reduction in menstrual pain within two to three cycles of consistent care. The inflammatory and immune-regulatory changes that reduce the underlying disease activity take longer to accumulate, but consistent care over time produces meaningful improvement in both symptom severity and quality of life.

Herbal medicine supports the acupuncture work — addressing the specific inflammatory and hormonal pattern, improving circulation to the pelvic organs, and providing continuous support between sessions. Herbal prescribing for endometriosis is approached with care regarding any hormonal medications or treatments you may be using.

Treatment is designed to:

  • Reduce menstrual pain severity and duration

  • Ease chronic pelvic pain and pain with intercourse

  • Calm the inflammatory and immune activity driving endometrial tissue growth

  • Address central pain sensitization — reducing the nervous system's amplification of pain signals

  • Support mood, energy, and sleep alongside pain management

  • Improve quality of life and daily function during a challenging chronic condition

Acupuncture for endometriosis is offered as a complement to your gynecologist's care. Please continue all prescribed treatments and monitoring. If you are on hormonal therapy or preparing for surgery, let us know so we can approach herbal prescribing appropriately.

What to Expect

Your first session includes a full intake covering your endometriosis history, symptom pattern across the cycle, current treatment plan, and what is most affecting your quality of life. Endometriosis presentations vary significantly — some people are primarily pain-driven, others have more systemic symptoms — and treatment is individualized accordingly.

Consistent care over three to six months produces the most meaningful results. Menstrual pain often improves within the first two to three cycles. Broader inflammatory and systemic changes build more gradually. Many people find that regular acupuncture significantly reduces their reliance on pain medication and improves their overall experience of living with the condition.
