Acupuncture for Psoriasis

Support for Chronic Plaque Psoriasis, Flare Management, Itching & Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that shows up on the skin but runs much deeper. The accelerated skin cell cycle that produces plaques is driven by immune dysregulation — and that dysregulation affects more than the skin. Fatigue, joint pain, elevated cardiovascular risk, and the significant psychological burden of a visible chronic condition are all part of the picture.

Conventional treatment for psoriasis has improved considerably, but many people still find themselves cycling through treatments that work partially or temporarily, or carrying side effects that make ongoing use difficult. At ECHO, care for psoriasis addresses the immune pattern driving the condition — working with the body's regulatory systems rather than suppressing them.

What We Support

  • Plaque psoriasis — the most common form, with raised, scaly patches on the skin

  • Guttate psoriasis — small, drop-shaped lesions often triggered by infection or stress

  • Inverse psoriasis — smooth, inflamed patches in skin folds

  • Scalp psoriasis — scaling, itching, and inflammation on the scalp

  • Psoriatic arthritis — joint pain, stiffness, and swelling associated with psoriasis

  • Stress-triggered flares — psoriasis that reliably worsens with emotional load, illness, or life disruption

  • Itch and discomfort — reducing the ongoing physical burden of active psoriasis

  • Psoriasis alongside metabolic or cardiovascular concerns

  • Psoriasis on biologic or systemic medication — as a complement to conventional treatment

How Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Help

Psoriasis involves an overactive immune response that accelerates skin cell production and drives chronic inflammation. Acupuncture addresses the immune and stress system contributors to this pattern — reducing systemic inflammatory signaling, calming the stress response that triggers and amplifies flares, and supporting the body's overall regulatory capacity.

Herbal medicine has a long history of use for psoriasis in East Asian Medicine, with formulas selected to address the specific inflammatory pattern — whether the presentation is predominantly hot and dry, damp and crusting, or blood-deficient and itchy. Herbal prescribing for psoriasis requires careful consideration when patients are on immunosuppressive or biologic medications, and is always coordinated with conventional care.

Treatment is designed to:

  • Reduce plaque thickness, scaling, and skin inflammation

  • Decrease itch and physical discomfort

  • Calm the immune reactivity driving accelerated skin cell turnover

  • Reduce the frequency and severity of flares

  • Address psoriatic arthritis pain and joint inflammation

  • Support stress regulation — one of the most consistent flare triggers

Acupuncture for psoriasis is offered as a complement to your dermatologist's care. If you are on biologic or immunosuppressive medication, please let us know so we can approach herbal prescribing with appropriate caution and coordination.

What to Expect

Your first session includes a full intake covering the type and distribution of your psoriasis, flare history, current treatment plan, and what has and hasn't worked. Psoriasis is a highly individual condition — the same diagnosis can present very differently from one person to the next, and treatment reflects that specificity.

Psoriasis responds gradually. Many people notice a reduction in itch and some softening of plaques within the first four to six weeks. More significant changes in plaque coverage and flare frequency build over a longer course of care. Herbal medicine between sessions is often what sustains and deepens the improvement.
