Acupuncture for Pregnancy Nausea & Morning Sickness
Support for Pregnancy Nausea, Food Aversions, & Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Pregnancy nausea is one of the most common and disruptive experiences of the first trimester — and often extends well beyond it. For some people it arrives as mild queasiness in the morning. For others it is relentless, all-day nausea with food aversions, vomiting, and an inability to maintain normal function. In its most severe form, hyperemesis gravidarum, it can result in significant weight loss, dehydration, and the need for medical intervention.

Medication options during pregnancy are limited, particularly in the first trimester when the concern for fetal development is highest. Acupuncture offers a safe, non-pharmacological approach with a strong evidence base for pregnancy-related nausea — and is one of the conditions for which insurance commonly covers acupuncture during pregnancy.

Our Approach
Pregnancy nausea is understood in East Asian Medicine as a disruption in the body's ability to move and settle its internal environment during a period of rapid change. Treatment is gentle, precise, and adapted for the specific demands of pregnancy — including careful attention to point selection and herbal safety.

Sessions may include:
-
Acupuncture to calm nausea, regulate digestive function, and settle the nervous system's contribution to queasiness
-
Herbal medicine when appropriate — selected with close attention to pregnancy safety, and only when the benefit clearly outweighs any risk

Many people notice meaningful improvement within a small number of sessions. For more persistent or severe nausea, consistent care over several weeks tends to produce the most stable results.

Hyperemesis gravidarum requires medical management. Acupuncture is offered as a complementary support alongside your obstetric care — not as a replacement for it. If you are experiencing significant vomiting, weight loss, or dehydration, please consult your midwife or OB first.

Insurance Coverage
Pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting is one of the conditions most commonly covered by insurance for acupuncture. If you have an active insurance plan, there is a reasonable likelihood that some or all of your care may be covered. We are happy to verify your benefits once you are booked — please schedule at least 24 hours in advance to allow time for verification.
