Acupuncture

The Core of Practice at ECHO — How It Works & What to Expect

Acupuncture is the foundation of care at ECHO. It involves the precise insertion of hair-thin needles at specific points on the body — prompting measurable physiological responses that influence pain, nervous system regulation, circulation, and tissue function.

The needles don't inject or remove anything. Their effect comes from the body's response to their placement — regulating the nervous system, releasing endorphins and neurotransmitters that modulate pain, improving local circulation, and reducing muscular tension. Most people find acupuncture to be unexpectedly relaxing — it is common to enter a deeply restful state during sessions.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture has been studied across a range of conditions and its mechanisms are increasingly well understood. Treatment works on multiple levels simultaneously:

  • Nervous system regulation — shifting the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic activity, reducing the chronic activation that underlies stress, pain amplification, and poor sleep

  • Pain modulation — stimulating the release of endorphins, enkephalins, and serotonin, and downregulating central sensitization in chronic pain conditions

  • Improved circulation — increasing local blood flow to muscles, tendons, and joints, supporting tissue repair and reducing inflammation

  • Muscle tension release — reducing the protective guarding patterns that develop around injury, pain, and chronic stress

  • Hormonal regulation — influencing the HPA axis and reproductive hormone signaling, relevant in fertility, menstrual health, and stress-related conditions

What to Expect

Your first session includes a full clinical intake — covering your health history, current concerns, and what you want to address. Needle placement is guided by your specific presentation rather than a standard protocol. Sessions typically last 45–75 minutes depending on the service tier.

The sensation of acupuncture varies — most people feel little to nothing at insertion, and may notice a mild heaviness or warmth at the needle site. Needles are retained for 20–40 minutes while you rest. Many people notice meaningful changes after their first session; for more established conditions, results typically build over a consistent course of care.
